CHAPTER SIXTEEN

TJ

We’ve been arguing on the need for Student Unions and the girls are against it because of the current tension between the University administration and an activist student group. When I direct questions and suggestions to Mabel, she gives monosyllabic answers. It’s grating, yet funny. If I didn’t know better, I’ll believe someone wants me to herself. Or was it because we were discussing money and got interrupted?

Lately, I’ve been stalking Mabel - taking note of her class schedule, asking questions from those who would answer, watching how she interacts with others. She has lost significant weight since we met and it’s looking good on her. I want to tell her this, but don’t know how to approach it with her because…well I guess we’re not at that level yet - where she won’t feel self-conscious.

Is she doing it for me?

Na…it’s not possible. I don’t think – well, that will mean she really cares about how I see her.

These past two weeks have been fun. The other night, we read in the library that is open all night to readers with library cards.

“Want some?” I flashed a cookie in her face. Because this floor is meant for all night and group readers, there are no barricades between us.

“Ola-T!” she reprimanded me in a hushed whisper, eyes darting round the room. Shrugging, I took a bite off the cookie. In lightning speed, she pushed my hands down, underneath the table, then looked around to confirm we were not being watched, before speaking between her teeth, “What is wrong with you?”

“What?” I feigned innocence.

“You and I both know that bringing in snacks is prohibited,” continuing in her hushed tone, leaning forward.

“You were the one who suggested using the library, I was cool with the other hall.” Chewing gently on the cookie, I looked around too. Others were too busy arguing with their study partners and the library support staff on duty was nowhere in sight. No one cared about two people having a hushed argument.

“Yeah. It was becoming noisy.”

Just because Tega, Richard’s lodge mate stopped by and spent about thirty minutes of our limited time talking about fantasy football with me. She didn’t like it. I apologized. It happened again as people began recognizing I was a regular.

“I suggested using your place remember?”

“I have a roommate.”

“And my place.”

“You’re a guy.”

“You made the choice. I can’t go on for three hours and not eat anything. My brain needs supplements. Penetrating supplements

that will keep it pumped, well juiced, to work extra time.”

She sighed, glancing up to the ceiling - that was when I knew her mind was in the gutter – then her gaze focused on me. “Such a dirty mind.”

Those were innocent words! “What did I do again?”

“I’ll cancel this whole session if you piss me off,” her hands pointing on the table for emphasis.

She was becoming high maintenance. Throwing tantrums of different shades since she picked that call. I think she is regretting our arrangement. Maybe she had other things to do instead of spending her time with me.
